Wollongong punk, garage-rock band Hoon are laying down fresh rubber with their new album, embarking on their biggest tour to date.
The group's lead vocalist, Daniel Breda, says that after a lot of effort and time the new album is trending upwards with fans. “The response has gone really well, actually way better than we expected.
“We put a lot of effort into it and everything, but we were just surprised with how well it went. This is our first full-length album, this one's almost like a double album; it goes for like 56 minutes.”

Daniel says the new album's creation was a lengthy process, but worth it. “We'd been working on it for about a year and a half before we released [it].
“We made a bunch of film clips; two have been released already. It's quite a long preparation actually,” he laughs. “We do everything ourselves; we're self managed, we do the film clips ourselves, we are our own booking agent. So it takes a hell of a long time, but it's very satisfying.”
Hoon's upcoming October tour is their largest to date with ten east-coast shows. “We're really excited, a little bit nervous but mainly excited,” Daniel says about the tour.
“We've got some really great support bands playing and we're always excited to meet new people and other bands,” he says.
Hoon recently had the opportunity to tour Indonesia and jumped at it with eyes wide open. “Essentially we got a message on Facebook saying 'do you want to tour Indonesia?' and we were like 'oh this is kind of weird',” Daniel says with a laugh.
“Because we don't have full-time jobs at all we just played a bunch of shows, saved a heap of money and had a Kickstarter [campaign] and it all worked out. We played predominately in East Java.”
Daniel says the tour was a major step up for the band. “It was hard. Before that, we had only done minor tours. I think we're better people for doing it, seeing how [the locals] live and listening to their music.”

Continuing the band's DIY approach, Hoon self-produce and release their own video clips, including 'Nature Boy' which premiered at Vivid Sydney recently. The clip was integral in earning the band a spot at Yours & Owls Festival in Wollongong.
Even though they have their October tour set in stone, Daniel is already looking ahead to the next stage of the band's career. “We're going to release some videos and we're about to go into the studio to record a six-track EP. So we're already making new music; I think there will be around 14 songs,” Daniel says.
When it comes to their music, Hoon live and and breathe it 24/7. “Art. That's all we know how to do and truly do,” Daniel says.
“I suppose we do have some hobbies like Kyle the drummer really likes the football, so he's been watching the footy a lot,” he laughs. “It sounds weird but I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't do music and art.”
