The Hoodoo Gurus (unplugged) are set to rock the stage supporting The Breakfast Club's upcoming event, Rockin' 4 The Homeless, which is raising money to provide a permanent home for the volunteer staffed Redcliffe organisation in Brisbane.
Dave Faulkner, lead singer of Hoodoo Gurus, jumped at the idea of being apart of the charity event. “I really think what they are doing is a marvellous thing and I want to help them in whatever way I can, and for me usually helping is singing a few songs.”
Dave and fellow Gurus member Brad Sheppard will bring their acoustic style of Hoodoo Gurus anthems to the stage, performing some of the bands hits as well as less-known favourites.
Dave believes fans of the band will be surprised when they hear some of Gurus' hits played a little differently.
“Surprisingly, there’s a couple of songs that you would think we would need the drums but work fine without, like 'Miss Freelove 69'. That one sounds great without drums and same with 'Like Wow Wipeout'. People know the songs so well they almost hear the drums in their heads.”
The Breakfast Club are a group of volunteers that was established 15 years ago. They support and help not only the homeless in the Redcliffe area, but also the elderly by providing those in need with hot meals (over 1,500 per month), washing facilities, social services information and outreach support.
Rockin’ 4 The Homeless is an annual event that is run by musicians and supporters from the Redcliffe area that is growing substantially every year.
Dave wants the world to know just how important this volunteer group is and what they do to help those who truly need it. “It’s amazing what they’re doing, by providing breakfast for people that obviously can barely afford to live; they cater to the homeless and for the elderly in the area.
“The pension is not enough to live on; it's terrible what our old people have to go through, so this is an incredible thing. It’s also a social outlet for people. Old people can often be very isolated, so I think The Breakfast Club and what they are doing is just amazing and more power to them.”
The organisation are also running a raffle leading up to the event with the major prize a trip for two to Reading Festival (in the UK) with all airfares and accommodation arranged.
Fans of Hoodoo Gurus should also keep an eye out the next month or so as the band have some exciting news Dave hinted at. “We have some big stuff coming up we’re going to announce next month, but it’s not about an album.
"But it’s about the band going into a whole new phase; kind of exciting. I cannot say any more than that.” Hoodoo Gurus Unplugged headline Rockin' 4 The Homeless at Redcliffe Leagues Club (Brisbane) 28 April.
