The home intruder who broke into rapper Eminem's US mansion in April this year was there to kill the 'Stan' rapper, a US court has heard.

Appearing in Macomb County District Court in Detroit on Wednesday (US time), Matthew David Hughes faces charges of first-degree home invasion and malicious destruction of property.

Officer Adam Hackstock testified that Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, was asleep when Hughes broke a house window with a brick. Once inside, he located Eminem's bedroom.

"When Mr. Mathers asked him why he was there, he was told by Mr. Hughes that he was there to kill him," Officer Hackstock said on the stand.

It's the second time Hughes has had brush with Eminem, having been caught previously breaking into the star's previous mansion.

Most will know the phrase 'stan culture' originates from Eminem's 'Stan'. The song tells the story of a deranged fan named Stanley 'Stan' Mitchell who kills himself and his pregnant girlfriend when he fails to get Eminem's attention.

A spooky case, perhaps, of art imitating life Mr Mathers.
