Hey Geronimo: Making The Video

Hey Geronimo
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Brisbane locals Hey Geronimo have done it again with the release of their new video, accompanying the single ‘Dreamboat Jack.’

Hey Geronimo's infectious, summery tunes have captured the cochlea of music-lovers across Australia. With a sound like the illegitimate lovechild of Weezer and The Beach Boys, it’s no wonder they’ve become instant radio favourites. Now they've released a ridiculously cute video to accompany the ‘Dreamboat Jack’ release that pays homage to Live And Let Die with hand puppets. Why not?

“We sort of tried to do it shot-for-shot," frontman Pete Kilroy explains. "I’m not sure if that worked out, but the boat chase from Live And Let Die is re-enacted right in the middle.”

The boys from Hey Geronimo, with the help of Brisbane-based animator Joe Brumm, filmed the video themselves using handycams.

“We got some cameras and thought 'these are cool. What can we do with these? Let's put them onto remote control cars.' There was no real idea behind it. It's kind of just shots of cars driving around, and there has to be a reason they're driving around, I guess, so that's how that idea came about,” Pete says.

“[Filming took] a long time. You know, it was one of those things that seems like a good idea at the time, and then you're knee-deep in the creek on a Saturday afternoon thinking, 'where did I go wrong in my life?'”

The video is disarmingly adorable. Indeed, one thing that sets Hey Geronimo apart from other bands is their disinterest in the pretentious rock & roll persona.

“We don't do that,” Pete says. “We don't need to fill that void — that market's already cornered. We just figured that there's nothing better than going to a show and having a smile on your face, so that's where we're at. We don't want to bring anyone down.”
