Headlined By Yothu Yindi 2024 Brunswick Music Festival Features 60 Gigs Across 30 Venues

L-R top to bottom: Wednesday, Yothu Yindi, Gut Health, Sweetie

A celebration of people, place, culture and music, Brunswick Music Festival returns in 2024 for its 36th instalment.

Set to take over the inner-city suburb in Melbourne from 3-11 March (with Estonian House again the bastion for premium performances), the 2024 BMF programme is stacked with talent that spans more than 60 gigs, over 30 venues across 9 days.

Brunswick's best live music venues, bars, nooks, crannies and creative crevices will also host music in all its conceivable forms including Jazzlab, Stay Gold, Howler, Brunswick Ballroom, and The Retreat.

Festival highlights include Indigenous treasures Yothu Yindi, American shoegaze country rockers Wednesday, Zamrock '70-'80s legends Zamibia's psych garage rockers WITCH (who released their newest album 'Zango' last year, almost 40 years since their previous record) and indie rock singer-songwriter MJ Lenderman (who is a member of Wednesday).

Highly Contagious is a mini festival curated by local sonic explorers Gut Health (alongside Crown Ruler and Slow Clap), who'll be joined by one of post-punk's most crucial voices Sneaks (USA), New Zealand electronic enigma Vanessa Worm, and Greece's savage punk instigators Frenzee.

After a sold-out show at OzAsia Festival in Adelaide, Saudara Sound System is coming home to Brunswick Music Festival, bringing hip hop, electronic beats and soulful vocals together with traditional Balinese gamelan percussion orchestra and hypnotic Balinese dance. Fast-rising superstar vocalist Komang (Rosie Clynes) and Ria Soemardjo will be joined by electronic and experimental artists, JIWA and Joelistics.

After its triumphant return in 2023, Sydney Road Street Party will open Brunswick Music Festival, the free event prickling the shopping strip with performance, art, delicious delights, spectacle and wonder.

The day will feature live performances from the likes of Kai Cult, Porpoise Spit, Sunfruits, Our Carlson, Billiam and The Split Bills, S.U.G.A.R., Favoured State, The Maggie Pills, Metdog, Pizza Death!, Snowy and others.

The inaugural Brunswick Music Festival Night Bowls will be soundtracked by Don't Thank Me, Spank Me!, Eggy, Kosmetika and Obscura Hail, with everyone invited to enter a representative team of three players for the big bowls tournament.

The Australian Art Orchestra will explore the sonic potential of Coburg Town Hall, centring its famous organ in a series of commissioned works composed by AAO Artistic Director Aaron Choulai and Associate Sofia Carbonara.

While Blossom Rot Records, Bad Apples, Melbourne Electronic Sound Studios, MOM Gallery and Neurotiq Erotiq have all built their own epic events in this year's line-up.

"Brunswick Music Festival is one of Australia's premier annual music festivals," Merri-bek City Council Mayor Adam Pulford says. "We are so excited to announce that Yothu Yindi will be headlining the Brunswick Music Festival this year, and we are lucky to have Brunswick's iconic Estonian House as our major venue.

"This year we're celebrating 36 years of the Brunswick Music Festival and its amazing history of music, culture, and community. We invite everyone, near and far, to join us at a gig, hang out at the Sydney Road Street Party and celebrate everything we love about Brunswick and our local Merri-bek music scene."

Ticketed events are on sale.

Merri-bek City Council's Brunswick Music Festival (Melbourne) takes place 3-11 March.
