No Cameras Allowed. Who Is Haney Conning?

James Marcus Haney: One way or the other - a con artist.
Founder and Publisher. Based in Brisbane.
Howard started Scene Magazine in 1993. Paul Keating was Prime Minister. Whitney, Janet and Mariah all had Aussie #1s and Mark Zuckerberg was 9. Over 30 years he's overseen the growth of scenestr magazine to become Australia's largest – and only national – street press while forging a digital-first imperative for the title in the mid-naughties. He's judged more battle of the bands than he cares to remember and proud of the myriad media partnerships the company has earned across the music, arts and comedy sectors. He likes Star Trek and a good Oxford Comma – way too much fun at parties.

Filmmaker/ photographer James Marcus Haney reckons he's bluffed his way into just about every festival imaginable.

But has he conned festival organisers out of their bucks, or is he conning a gullible gen-whatever with a ripping yarn? The way the trailer tells it, he's got more front than Myer, a cheeky way with himself and a huge story to tell. But as with an early Richard Branson autobiography, he'll also allow himself the odd setback — but not so many to detract from the aura of being a total ... winner.

Haney says it all started when "In 2010 I jumped the fence at music festival and posed as a press photographer". His film, 'No Cameras Allowed' — yep, ironically you're gonna have to pay to see his remarkable story — was launched in Los Angeles this week. Web-sites and blogs are relating this tale which is growing with each telling.

There's undoubtedly some truth to some early fence-jumping; but a serial winner at the gates and buffoon-maker of security around the world — we'll have to see the film. Or in my case not. Blair Witch Project, anyone?
