Perth rockers Gyroscope return with a national tour after announcing their first batch of new music since 2010 with the double A-side single release, ‘Crooked Thought / DAB’.
After a long hiatus, Gyroscope are back; lead vocalist and guitarist Daniel Sanders tells all.
“For us, it’s about trying to come up with some music that would inspire us enough to once again pick up the rock tools and head into the studio… to be able to start a new chapter is a great feeling.”
“We are definitely keen to get back into the studio next year and see what else we can record.”
This is their first studio recording since the band's fourth album ‘Cohesion’. “The [new] songs aren’t about anything in particular. I suppose it means something to me but I like to leave my work open-ended,” Daniel says.
“The story is there, but it’s up to you to decipher the meaning.” Gyroscope will be hitting the road in January for the national tour: ‘The Tour Of Crooked Thoughts’. “It’s been a while, so it’s really great to get back out there and play live.”
Adelaide’s Horror My Friend will join Gyroscope on tour alongside local acts in each city: Crum (Brisbane), Sweet Gold (Melbourne), Hatakaze (Sydney), The Best Extras (Adelaide) and The Faim (Perth).
“Some bands are old mates and others are young bands that we think are cracking… we are stoked to see what these young bands are capable of.”
While they have been quiet the last few years, Gyroscope have still spent time together jamming and most importantly living.
“We have been really enjoying ourselves and just living and doing it man. We continued along our journey and so be it, we took some time off,” Daniel says.
Never completely hanging up their boots, Gyroscope believe in only releasing music when it feels right. “It was a great experience because we knew what we wanted to do when we came back.”
From humble beginnings, Gyroscope was formed in a school hallway in 1997. “We were all at high school and we got together and next thing we know we’re playing four to five nights a week here in Perth,” Daniel says.
“I guess some of the first bands like Jebediah sort of made us really want to be a band and made us realise that we could accomplish something living in Perth; we also grew up listening to bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden.”
For those new to Gyroscope, Daniel says their sound is a mix of rock, grunge and indie. “It’s rock music, it’s fun music and to be able to share it is a blessing.”
After their January tour, Gyroscope are excited to get the ball moving again as they look to create more music. “We are definitely looking at making some more music, whether that leads to touring so be it.
"But we are definitely keen to get back into the studio next year and see what else we can record.”
