Brimming with rhapsodic new tunes following a successful stint touring, indie-rock outfit Grouplove wanted to capitalise on the energy they’d created, so they headed straight to the studio.
“There was a slight hesitation to go back into recording, because we'd just come off tour,” says guitarist and vocalist Christian Zucconi about the sessions that created the group’s second album, ‘Spreading Rumours'. "We hadn't had any time away from each other, but we wanted to capitalise on that energy. During the time of recording, we all lived together in a house in the Hollywood Hills and the studio was onsite, so we were never far away from the music.”
The band recorded ‘Spreading Rumours' at band member Ryan Rabin's LA studio. “We wrote and sang songs all day and into the night, and then the next morning we would take them into the studio to record,” Christian says.
“We only did about four takes and then chose one of those recordings for the final song. We didn't want to spend too much time slaving over that, which is why the record has a chaotic sound. We've grown so much since the last album. We're better now and spending all that time living, breathing and thinking music has allowed us to write better hits. It was tough because we had no break but it was the best thing we could have done for the music.”
Over 600 shows later, Christian is spoilt for choice when it comes to his favorite gig. “It's a tough one because we've played all over the world in great shows, but we're so excited to come back to Australia and play Big Day Out,” he says. “We can't wait — it will be a crazier show than ever before — a lot of fun. We're going to give it our all. We don't really have any weird pre-show rituals before going onstage but the music we made has high energy and when we play, we’re alive.”
