Green Day have had an illustrious career; 8 studio albums, over 65 million records sold, 5 Grammy Awards, a drummer named Tré Cool (we wish we'd thought of that clever little French play on words) – this one time, we even heard an Avril Lavigne cover of Basket Case. We're serious.
They could call it quits right now with enough successes under their belt to avoid any criticism. In fact, they've had some of us thinking they already had. Their last album was released in 2009 and since then (we'll just skip the part about the Broadway musical) they've been mostly underground, playing secret shows in the US under pseudonyms. Note: “Avril Lavigne” has not been one of these, to our knowledge.
Well, they're certainly not done. Their new album ¡Uno! drops this Friday and front man Billie Joe Armstrong has revealed that the pop-punk trio plan to spread the love to Aussie shores in “February or March” next year, and they want to make it nice and cosy.
“We'd like to do some clubs as well as playing in the bigger places,” Armstrong says. “That's an experience we haven't had in Australia since the first time we have been there, playing the 300 to 500 seaters. Australian crowds go off – so being in that small a room would be a lot of fun.” The boys last toured off the back of 21st Century Breakdown in 2009, playing large arenas, so fans may be in for a long-awaited treat.
The band plans to release another two albums - ¡Dos! in November and ¡Tré! in January of next year – before they head down under, so it looks like their set will be chock full of new material. As long as they include a rousing rendition of Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) we're sure mothers everywhere will be satisfied.
