When Californian electronic producer Giraffage (aka Charlie Yin) gets to Australia in March, he wants to fulfil his dream of riding in the pouch of a kangaroo.
Giraffage released 'Too Real' last year, his debut album after a series of EPs and mixtapes. A self-described 'music nerd', Giraffage brings a wealth of eclectic sounds and beats to his productions.
Ahead of the 'Too Real' tour, we get real with Giraffage and ask him about the album, touring and of course, kangaroos. 'Cause you know, Straya!
You released 'Too Real' last year. How have you found the response to the record, particularly live?
[Giraffage] It’s been great so far. I’m glad that for the most part, people are enjoying the little part of my soul that I put out in physical form to the world.
The live show is all original material, so it’s great that people have been coming out and enjoying themselves to it.
Having already released a number of remixes and EPs, how did you approach writing and recording songs for the album?
I think it’s important to stay true to yourself and release music that you want to hear. My tastes are constantly evolving and thus my music evolves with it.
The main difference with this album was that I got way more into analog synths and so there’s a lot more hardware on this album than previous albums.
What does the album say about your evolution or progress as an artist over the years?
I’d like to think it sounds more mature and grown-up than previous works.
It’s a very personal album and I’m glad that my music-production skills are at a point as to where I can properly convey the emotions I was experiencing throughout this period of time.
What's in store for fans when you tour Australia in March?
You can expect a lot of songs off of the 'Too Real' EP as well as a handful of remixes and throwback songs.
What are you hoping to get out of the tour this time around?
I love Australia and the people there, so it’s going to be nice playing my music to such a great, friendly crowd.
Is there anything you want to tick off from your bucket list while you're here?
I’ve always wanted to ride in the pouch of a kangaroo.
You describe yourself as a music nerd; what songs/ artists would we find on your personal playlist?
At the moment a lot of Cocteau Twins, Kraftwerk, Daniel Avery and Boy Pablo.
Who is a dream collaborator you'd like to work with?
Michael Jackson.
Are you working on another album or release at the moment?
I haven’t had much time to settle down yet to work on new music, but I recently finished building a new home studio. So expect a lot of new music from me soon.
What have you got planned for the rest of the year?
Doing some more tours, festivals and lots of music writing.
