Getting To Know June Low

June Low
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

June Low (Emma White) will be playing a stripped back duo show with new guitarist, Brian Mann (Mick Medew & The Mesmerisers, Screamin' Stevie's Australia, Wolf Up) at the Brisbane Fringe Festival.

Playing a few new songs as well as a couple from the recently released album, 'Exhale', Emma takes us into the life of June Low:

Who is June Low...
June Low is the alter ego of Emma White. June Low exists in various forms from solo through to full band (Jane Elliott, Andy Davis, Brian Mann). June Low has existed since 2014 and continues to morph into different beasts. The sound is folky with dashes of pop and lashings of roots.

I/ we sound like...
The hidden songs in gusty wind-storms.

Our first gig was...
The first full band June Low gig occurred at The Zoo, a stalwart venue of the Brisbane music scene. I saw my boss dance for the first time which was a little bit awkward for me.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision...
I asked Jane Elliott for ideas. She said 'name it after a song'. In a slightly self-indulgent move, I named it after a song I wrote called 'June Low'.

In the studio I/ we usually...
Go in with plan X and come out following plan Y. Jane also falls asleep sometimes.

If I/ we could tour with anyone...
Ani Difranco

Social media is...
Overrated but a useful tool.

My favourite app at the moment is...
Google Maps because following your nose will only get you so far.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time...
I fell down a flight of stairs in grade 6 which left me with a giant scab on my chin. I was thereafter referred to as 'redbeard' by a busload of bratty private school boys who I had the privilege of sharing a bus with after school.

Life on the road can be...
Transformative at best and anxiety-riddled at worst. Good company helps.

If you'll have June Low on your bill, all I/ we ask is that our rider contains...
Good vibes and failing that, expresso martinis.

The most scary scenario we've/ I've found ourselves/ myself in, was...
Stage interlopers who take over the vocal mic. Drunk scary ones.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band...
Suzanne Vega because she's a babe and I think we have something in common.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party...
Eddy Izzard to make me laugh, Emmylou Harris to transport my soul and Gandalf for the magic tricks.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
Roast Lamb with mint sauce served with pinot noir.

No matter the expense, send me a case of...
Dead Can Dance Vinyl.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was...

When I was in a hot yoga phase last year.

What's the one chore you dislike the most?
Doing the dishes.

Do you have any phobias... please explain?
I don't like it when my fingers get all pruney from hot water (mainly doing the dishes). I feel older than I am.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? If so, what type?
If I was single I'd go on that Chinese dating show 'If You Are The One'. That show is kooky.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down?
My work colleague Owen. He's always playing pranks on me so it's pay-back time. I think I'd hide his lunch and then play dumb.

June Low play with Phoenix In Flowers at Junk Bar as part of Brisbane Fringe Festival, 16 August.
