Georgie Neilsen Breaks Down Her Debut EP 'Suburban Daze' Track By Track

Georgie Neilsen is a country-folk artist from Brisbane.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

An independent artist from Meanjin, Georgie Neilsen belies her youth with songwriting that captures all the feels associated with heartbreak, emotional chaos and reclaiming one's independence.

Together with co-writer and close friend Cody McWaters, Georgie has written a collection of country-folk specked songs that feature on her debut EP 'Suburban Daze' that fans of Angie McMahon, Carla Geneve, and Middle Kids will relish.

"The EP began with the title track 'Suburban Daze' when Cody and I recorded it back in 2019," begins Georgie. "We didn't have a definitive idea of what songs were going to be apart of this collection, but they make a lot sense together now.

"All of the songs were written at a time of significance at some point in my life. Whether I knew it or not, these songs were an enlightenment to what was going on and like many songwriters I wrote them to release and reflect what I was going through.

"Together, they follow this natural progression of a teenage girl finding her way to womanhood accepting change.

"I'm so grateful for the people who have supported me to do what I love, which is make music authentically and I feel like this EP shows that."

I. 'A Day In A Life'

'A Life In A Day' is the description of loss, separation and maturity for a young person. A choice was made to have a stripped-back version of the song to exhibit the direction of my songwriting.

II. 'Suburban Daze'

'Suburban Daze' is an intrinsic description of the neighbourhood I grew up in from the native flora and fauna to the neighbours arguing around me.

This song encapsulates the dichotomy of my teenage life, originally written with a dear family friend Harmon Ferrett, it became the first piece of work that Cody and I recorded together back in 2019. After spending years playing in different acts, 'Suburban Daze' was the beginning of a new era built with the support and friendship of Cody McWaters.

III. 'The Last Time I Felt Better'

'The Last Time I Felt Better' is about the emotions experienced when two people suddenly appear in each other's lives and instantly fall into a euphoric romance fuelled by an addiction to that feeling.

When the relationship quickly hits a fork in the road, there is a realisation that this flame might burn out, and it consumes you with the desire to make that feeling last forever.

IV. 'Eyes Wide Open'

'Eyes Wide Open' has gone through many forms. From a heavy, guitar-driven song to a solo, soulful, folk tune and through drawing influences from HAIM and Katy Perry it has transformed into a sweet and sassy bop about reclaiming power and independence post-heartbreak.

V. 'I'm Changing'

This song is about a relationship, but not the romantic kind. It's a coming-of-age tale.

Georgie Neilsen plays SummerFest at The Junk Bar (Brisbane) 3 December.
