Frontman of black midi, Geordie Greep will tour Australia this winter.
The experimental musician – fusing math rock, jazz fusion, avant-prog, post punk and prog rock – will headline concerts Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth in July-August.
When black midi went on an indefinite hiatus in 2024, Geordie turned to his solo endeavours, recording-releasing his debut album titled 'The New Sound', a record that throws open the doors on what happens when there's no one else in the room to answer to.
That freedom runs right through the record. A sprawling, high-quality take on alternative pop that leans into both the absurd and the meticulous.
There are traces of Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra and Scott Walker in the mix, but nothing settles long enough to sit comfortably in one place.
"Music can be so much more than learning to play the same as everybody else. It can be anything you want," Greep says. "With recording 'The New Sound', it was the first time I have had no one to answer to.
"Being in a band (black midi), we often have this 'we can do everything' feeling, but you are also kind of limited in that approach, and sometimes it's good to do something else, to let go of things."
Over thirty session musicians were involved in its making, on two continents. "Half of the tracks were done in Brazil, with local musicians pulled together at the last minute.
"They'd never heard anything I'd done before, they were just interested in the demos I'd made. The tracking was all done in one, maybe two days."
With plans to continue working with different musicians in different places, Greep's live shows follow the same instinct: no two nights landing the same way.
Tickets are on sale from 9am (local time) on 24 April.
