Gawurra Gaykamangu is a Yolngu performing artist from Milingimbi in North East Arnhem Land.
He has an emotional and resonant voice which allows him to deliver a masterful musical sensitivity, with Rolling Stone saying “Gawurra commands attention regardless of the backdrop”.
In 2016, Gawurra won the NT Song of the Year for the Pop category, won four NIMA Awards and received an ARIA nomination. This cemented his national recognition in both the music industry as well as the mainstream media.
2017 was also an eventful year for Gawurra, as he embarked on his first national tour around Australia, having sold out performances around the country while also appearing at several major music festivals.
Gawurra also performed at TEDxSydney2017, while his rotation on ABC Radio and Double J constantly increased. He has become a “must-see” live act, after gathering a mainstream following and captivating a national audience.
In 2017, Gawurra also started 'Gawurra Catfish Corporation', a professional music and artist services company. 'Gawurra Catfish Corporation' offers artist representation, music production, music licensing and recording label services.
The Western Australian newspaper said “Gawurra celebrates the natural wonders of his homeland in Gupapuyngu language across his debut album”.
Gawurrra finds it important to connect his culture to his music in order to share his love with people in small communities in the Northern Territory. At the same time, Gawurra also appeals to the major mainstream international music markets. He wishes to encourage everyone to build and refresh their spirits and to strengthen themselves through the vine of love.
