G Flip Is Flipping Out About Playing Groovin The Moo This Year

A seasoned all-rounder music writer and storyteller with a specialised interest in the history of rock.

The past two years have seen Melbourne singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist G Flip go from making music in her bedroom to playing her first (of many) touring festivals.

Otherwise known as Georgia Flipo, G Flip has been solidly winning the hearts of listeners around Australia and the world with her brand of self-produced indie pop.

Where her first single 'About You' had people pricking up their ears, the follow-up smash-hit 'Killing My Time' had them falling over each other with praise for the young creative.

“This exact time last year, no one knew who the f... I was and I was just playing music in my room, so it's pretty wild,” G Flip says in awe of her recent career trajectory. “It's been obviously amazing and absolutely mind-blowing what's happened, and my whole life has changed.”

From session drummer to rising phenomenon, G Flip also earned her first placement on a touring festival with Laneway Festival earlier this year.

She's followed up this success with her inclusion on the line-up for Groovin The Moo. “I'm doing what I love, which I’m so happy about and the two boys [Toothpick and Ferntree] in my band are my good friends so they get to travel with me,” she says.

“It's so cool getting to see new places I've never seen in the world. It's been the best year of my whole, entire life; such a massive journey and I've met so many people. I've shook hands with more people this [past] year than I have my whole life.

“I've had some of the biggest highs [but] at the same [time] it has been stressful. I'm very much a perfectionist with my music and my artwork and everything that I put out, so being a bit of a perfectionist and a bit of a control freak does cause me to stress out a bit more than the average person.”

Clearly excited to be on the stage at Groovin The Moo, G Flip says she and her band of fellow multi-instrumentalists like to put on a slightly different stage performance each show they play. “I like evolving my show each time,” she says.

“So right now the set I taught the boys for Laneway is a little different from my set at Splendour [In The Grass] and now I'm going to evolve it a bit more for my set at Groovin. I want to put in a bigger drum solo and I really want to try and get a keytar solo in as well.”

The occasional freak-out aside, G Flip is pursuing her passion with gusto and has released a further two singles, 'Drink Too Much' and 'Bring Me Home' – the latter of which is accompanied by a film clip that's emotionally engaging as the song itself.

“The song is such an emotional song and when it came to film clip ideas I wanted a film clip that would pair well with the song and that was also emotional,” G Flip explains.

“I'm not an actress so to write a storyline and getting me to act emotional and get my eyes watering – to me it was not an option. I would not be able to do that.

"So I wanted to put myself through something I knew would draw emotion, so drumming for as long as I could was my best idea.”
