Melbourne metal quintet Future Static are bringing the noise to BIGSOUND (in Brisbane) earlier September, armed with a vicious new single and led by freshly minted frontwoman Amariah 'Ami' Cook.

Future Static make their BIGSOUND debut on the heels of their latest single 'Venenosa' (Spanish for 'poisonous, venomous’), the second release featuring Ami on lead vocals after replacing Brianna Marsh in 2021.

"It sounds like it's going to be a good week," Ami says of BIGSOUND.

"I don't really know what to expect at all, because I've never been to anything like that ever, so I'm going in with a really open mind, have a good time, meet people in the industry and make as many connections as possible. See what other artists are doing on the business side of the music world."

Guitarist Jack Smith echoes Ami's sentiments. "We're feeling quite chuffed," Jack says.

"It's almost a privilege I'd say to be chosen to be part of [BIGSOUND], because it's not something that's taken lightly, and a lot of bands put a lot of effort in to trying to get onto it.

"So, I'm going to be beside for myself for the whole week we're there getting around watching some showcases."

Chief among the songs Future Static will be spruiking at BIGSOUND is their latest single 'Venenosa', the follow-up to 2021's 'Waves' that proves Ami has settled in comfortably to her new role.

"I always knew that I wanted to join a heavier band that was also really melodic, so as soon as the spot became open in Future Static, I definitely knew this is where I wanted to be," she says.

"The only thing I found difficult at first was trying to navigate the [screaming] side of it, because I'd never really done it before that much. Lockdown served its purpose in allowing me to practice and do it.

"As far as the way I feel about Future Static, all the people in there are my best friends so it's hard to see myself in any other position in life at the moment."

Future Static are currently on the road with Circles for their 'Sleepwalking' national tour in the lead-up to BIGSOUND, giving Future Static the ideal opportunity to fine-tune their performance before taking the stage for the industry showcase in Brisbane.

"It's going to be an absolute blast," Jack says of the tour. "We're doing a bigger run this time and also some new, bigger venues. We've got more new songs in the set; it's been the biggest set shake-up since the start of the year, so it's going to be a very good time trying to account for different crowds and scenarios we're going to be in."

Looking ahead for the band, both Ami and Jack can confirm a debut album is in the works for release in 2023, with Ami describing it as "probably one of the most diverse pieces of music that we've ever written and that if you're not a prog fan you're probably not used to hearing".

Jack adds: "'Waves' and 'Venenosa' are two pillars of what to expect, but there are some completely unexpected things. It's a real treat."

BIGSOUND takes place in Brisbane 6-9 September. Future Static showcase at Black Bear Lodge 6 September (1.55pm), Ric's Backyard 6 September (8.50pm), and Woolly Mammoth 8 September (8pm). Future Static also play CVLT Fest (alongside Alpha Wolf, Silent Planet, Deez Nuts and others) at Melbourne Pavilion 30 October.
