Soccer Mommy, the alt-indie sensation, is onside and ready to score during her return to Australia this June.
Like the rest of the music world, the pandemic had her on the sidelines but she's set to play Queensland festival Open Season, which was born out of the post-COVID music industry recovery, alongside concerts in Sydney, Melbourne, Torquay, Castlemaine and Perth. With her 2024 album 'Evergreen' – where she sings of unspeakable loss – Soccer Mommy's songs, she hopes, will speak to those who have been through the same.
Soccer Mommy, whose real name is Sophia Allison, has been a beloved figure in the indie rock scene for years. Her music is known for its raw and honest reflections on life, and 'Evergreen' is no exception.
Pitchfork describes the album as 'pairing raw reflections on grief with the most laid-back, pastoral music of her career', showcasing her ability to blend emotional depth with soothing melodies.
The canvas she painted 'Evergreen' on comprises many shades; a reflection that grief is not all dark black, but rather a swirl of colours.
"I think with any big, emotional events in your life, there's always a lot of conflicting feelings and things that kind of mash-up against each other, and I think that's where you can get a really good capture of a certain situation or feeling because nothing is ever straightforward," she says.
Soccer Mommy's approach to songwriting is deeply personal and introspective. Sophia uses music as a way to process her emotions. "I think writing music is such a good way to take all of the thoughts that I have constantly going in my head and make sense of them a little bit. It's a universal thing for everyone, everyone has these kinds of feelings."
While soccer is a team sport, songwriting for Soccer Mommy is more like golf; a solitary endeavour. "I will not collaborate with anyone.
"I refuse to in fact, I don't personally think it would lend itself to me and I find it uncomfortable the idea, and the experience is awkward."
Her music has always been autobiographical, with a touch of fiction. "Even when I write something fictional that comes, that's like in a totally different world, there's still a bit of truth, you know, there's still an emotion or something in there or something that I'm connecting to.
"I mean I lie sometimes when I'm writing. I definitely do that, and nobody gets to know when I do and when I don't." Audiences have multiple opportunities to try to guess the lies this winter.
