To celebrate the launch of Mau Powers new single, ‘Island Home’, he is embarking on his first tour. For the Brisbane leg, Public Enemy’s DJ Lord will be joining the bill for a special guest DJ set. Here, Mau lists five things people misunderstand about rappers.
1. We are all gangsters
First of all, no smart gangster would be on stage talking about their business, confessing to all their crimes! Second of all, there are so many genres of hip hop now, from conscious, political and party music. It’s not just one type of rap!2. We all swear and we're arrogant womanising misogynists that drink copious amounts of Hennessy
Just because record labels want to portray an image to sell records, it’s not my fault! Personally, I don’t drink and I love women like the queens they are!3. We are one-dimensional characters
Actually, I like heaps of other things — different kinds of music, food, books and art. To be a good MC you need to study the world and life and everything. Great MCs are poets and philosophers. Check out the content of some of the best rappers; like really get into it and you will learn a lot!4. We have a lot of kids to different women
Not true! I don’t want the baby mamma drama! No rapper in their right mind wants that drama. We leave that to the rock stars and reggae stars!5. All rappers are self-centred
Not true! We compromise, but on my terms ‘cause I’m always right. We like to talk about things, as long as it relates to us and it’s about us or our next project!Mau Power with Public Enemy's DJ Lord plays The New Globe Theatre Friday March 21. His new single, ‘Island Home’, from his forthcoming debut album, ‘The Show Will Go On’, is available now.
