First Watch: Tigermoth's Bladerunner Video

Tigermoth
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

'Effort And Essence' is the melding of the ancient with the future, and the third in Tigermoth's planned trilogy of albums.

Noted for his distinct use of hip hop rhythms and world music samples, Tigermoth has increasingly incorporated elements of psychedelica, abstract, vocal narratives and vivid, synthesized soundtracks into his work. 'Effort And Essence' is the pinnacle of these stylings.

The first track taken from 'Effort And Essence' is 'Bladerunner'. "The Bladerunner clip is inspired by '70s and '80s science-fiction films as the name would suggest," Tigermoth says, "but also borrows from '70s martial-arts films, in particular the work of the Shaw Brothers.

"It features a mystical kung fu, drum playing replicant who sits at a kit, driving the beat for most of the video, all the while passing in and out of mind bending, psychedelic, dimensional shifts. The conclusion of the video features the appearance of a monolith, bending folding through itself and space, in a homage to science fiction's, perhaps, greatest ever film, '2001: A Space Odyssey'. The future, mysticism and science fiction are all themes explored throughout the 'Effort And Essence' from which 'Bladerunner' was taken."

The clip is Tigermoth’s directorial debut.
