Amy Winehouse fans, prep the goosebumps 'cause you'll be tingling after watching the 'Back To Black' trailer, the Sam Taylor-Johnson movie depicting the life of the brilliant yet troubled star.
The 'Valerie' and 'Rehab' icon will be portrayed by Marisa Abela (who plays the bitchy yet aggressively determined Yasmin in 'Industry'; and was Teen Talk Barbie in 'Barbie'), who has recorded and impressively sings Amy's songs that feature in the film.Anyone who has watched the poignant and emotive 2015 documentary 'Amy' will recognise many moments from Amy's life from the trailer, unearthing a mix of bittersweet emotions given the tragedy of Winehouse's subsequent death in 2011.
The supporting cast are BAFTA-winning actor Jack O'Connell ('Skins') as Blake Fielder-Civil (Amy's husband between 2007-2009), Eddie Marsan ('Ray Donovan') as Mitch Winehouse, Juliet Cowan as Janis Winehouse and Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated Lesley Manville ('The Crown') as Amy's grandmother, Cynthia.
"Discovering a talent like Marisa Abela is akin to finding gold dust," director Sam Taylor-Johnson says. "The moment she looked into the lens at her first audition I knew she was the perfect actor to play Amy Winehouse.
"She put in an enormous amount of work, attention to every detail and she trained daily for hours to be able to sing throughout the entire movie. She doesn't impersonate Amy, she inhabits her."
Taylor-Johnson has form producing movies related to music legends, having made her directorial debut with 'Nowhere Boy', the 2009 movie about John Lennon's childhood. She also directed the original 'Fifty Shade Of Grey'.
'Back To Black' screens in Australian cinemas from 18 April, 2024.
