Iconic Australian musician Darren Hayes today releases his first new music in ten years, the new single ‘Let’s Try Being In Love’.

The single, a pulsing track tinged with disco vibes, laden with honest lyrics and concluding with a beautiful string outro, heralds a new chapter of accomplishments, and is a reminder of his talents and abilities in songwriting. ‘Let’s Try Being In Love’ is entirely arranged, produced, composed and performed by Hayes himself.

‘Let’s Try Being In Love’ is inspired by queer icons such as Patrick Cowley and Shep Pettibone, and is threaded by themes of romance as well as inspiration from 2017’s ‘Call Me By Your Name’. The song and video serve as a reflection from a man on life, love, regret and realisation.

“In the music video I’m looking back on that first period of my life where I’m married to a woman. I’m realising that in order to be free I have to destroy something beautiful and innocent. Scott’s [Evans] character represents the freight train of my future sexuality and that’s gonna emerge no matter what.”

“I’ve been married to Richard (Cullen) for almost 17 years, I’m in this really comfortable place in my life. But at the same time at mid-life I’m grieving the fact I never got to celebrate who I really was at the period of my life where I was most famous.”

Alongside the news and release of the single is the announcement that Darren Hayes will be celebrating his first live performance in a decade as a headliner of the 2022 Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.

“I couldn’t be more excited to return to Australia to headline the 2022 Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. Last year, I was in awe, along with the rest of the world, as Australians united and came together safely to celebrate our vibrant and resilient community,” Darren says.

“I decided in that moment, if this could happen again in 2022, I was going to do everything within my power to come home and celebrate with you. You can imagine how thrilled I am, truly, to have been chosen to close what I know will be an unforgettable and necessary night of pride and joy. I’m so looking forward to spending time together after so much time apart.”

‘Let’s Try Being In Love’ is out now. Darren Hayes plays Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras 2022 Parade on 5 March.
