Melbourne trio Chris Cavill & The Prospectors will release their new EP, ‘All That You Got’, at the end of June; it sees the group expand their folk sound with a blues-rock edge.
“We’ve been playing the tracks for a few months now at our live shows and we wanted to get something out fairly quickly that reflected the high energy of our shows,” says vocalist and guitarist, Chris Cavill.
“We’re really excited to get something out that’s a bit heavier and more upbeat than the last recording, just to showcase what we can do and not have people think we were limited to that folkier, softer sound.”
While Chris Cavill & The Prospectors established themselves as a folk act with their 2015 LP ‘Know Your Destiny’, for this EP they’ve drawn on their combined love for '70s blues-based rock such as Led Zeppelin and Tom Petty. “It came from the album; we had two tracks on there, ‘Love Until You Die’ and ‘Out On The Water’ and we really enjoyed the energy those songs were producing at our shows,” Chris says.
“We were finding that because we’re a local band and we do tend to play a lot of pubs, when you play in pubs on a Friday and Saturday night, folk will only get you so far.
“We decided to go a bit heavier but were also really enjoying it as well. It made our more folky ballads more effective when we played them live too, because people really enjoyed that change rather than just feeling it was heavy the whole time, so they’re working really well together actually.”

Rather than a shift in musical direction for the band, Chris says the new EP simply represents where they are and what they want to achieve at this point in time. “Influences for me are more modern like Ryan Adams, and he’s done a similar thing where he’ll go do a full, country album and then do a full, rock album; it’s the best of both worlds.
“‘Know Your Destiny’ definitely has more of a studio sound but at the time it was something I wanted to do. I wanted to have something that had a bit more songwriting focus and was a bit more polished. Whereas with this one we went in and we really took the feedback from our fans of wanting to hear something on a recording which sounds like what they hear when they come to see us.”
Chris Cavill & The Prospectors will be hitting the road in June-July for an east-coast tour in support of ‘All That You Got’ that will include dates in capital cities, as well as regional Victoria which will include the first time they’ve played in Bendigo. “We can’t wait,” Chris says, “it’s going to be great.
“Our first run of shows is up to Brisbane and Byron, and then the following weekend we hit Sydney. Then the week after we do regional Victoria and our final show will be at The Toff in Melbourne.
“We have a ball. We’re all pretty similar dudes, in our low 30s and we’ve been playing music for a good ten years in all sorts of different bands and we love it for what it is now. We still dream of great things but we just really enjoy playing live and that’s the main thing.”
