Festival Of Small Halls Line-up Announced

Andy Brown
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Canadian folk-pop musician, Andy Brown, will return to Australia for the fourth time in two years to take part in the Festival of Small Halls Queensland Spring Tour.

Caloundra Music Festival and Mullum Music Festival, are the bookends for a twenty-one-date adventure through regional and remote Queensland, and a few quick scurries into Northern New South Wales.

Modeled on a traditional Australian hall experience, the tour concentrates on visiting towns where communities are strong, but may not have access to high quality musical acts due to their remote locations, or lack of a suitable venue. Artists playing the Festival of Small Halls are chosen not only for the high calibre of their music, but for their enthusiasm and willingness to become part of the community for the brief time that they pass through - a perfect fit for the country halls that populate Australian towns.

"I am so excited to be performing as part of the Festival of Small Halls tour. Playing intimate venues is what I love to do most. I find that the words and meaning of a song are somehow more honest, and more deeply felt in the 'pin-drop' settings that the Festival of Small Halls tour is chock full of", said Andy.

"Couple that with the opportunity to perform with the wonderfully talented ladies that make up The Mae Trio, and sandwich the tour between two amazing festivals in Caloundra and Mullumbimby, that's definitely seven incredible weeks ahead. I can't wait to share my words and music, both old and new, with the beautiful folks in my home away from home … Australia."

The Mae Trio won the Australian Folk Alliance's Youth Folk Awards in 2013, the same year the young trio released their debut album, 'Housewarming'. In the brief time that has followed, they've been booked for every major folk festival in Australia, as well as being courted by the UK's top events and festivals, including a recent appearance at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall for the Commonwealth Games Celebrations. No strangers to touring, sisters Elsie and Maggie Rigby and childhood friend Anita Hillman, had toured in family bands and their own outfits prior to the sudden success of The Mae Trio.
