In attempting to understand the spirit of a generation, the significance of the music which spoke to its youth cannot be over-emphasised.
It’s through songs that we come to understand the personality of a culture, distilling the themes and attitudes that have characterised our collective identity. The '60s had The Beatles, while the '70s had Bowie, and we had. . . well, it’s difficult to say who will be remembered in decades to come as the masthead (or, dare I say, ‘best’) artist of the 2010s.
Though it is impossible to speak for everyone, it can be said that the '10s was an era of progressive and genre-bending attitudes in pop, with artists borrowing heavily from our shared musical past, from their contemporaries across genre boundaries.
