Jazz, folk and pop artist Brianna Carpenter will release her second album this month.
“’Oh So It Goes’ for me is kind of like a journey, but I hate the word journey. It's like an exploration of a life, so beginning to end and the emotions that you would have in that life. Every song has an emotion within that realm,” Carpenter says.
For her Brisbane album launch, the self-confessed people watcher will be accompanied by a live string quartet, a first for Brianna since her days in musical theatre. “I’m looking forward to having them and a grand piano there. It’s going be just awesome.”
Comprised of 11 tracks, Carpenter’s album will channel intimate topics such as losing hope and the loss of love between a couple. “I think songwriting is definitely therapeutic because I sort of gain all my inspiration from people. To me the most therapeutic part is then deconstructing that relationship data and making something out of it that is hopefully useful for that person. Even they won’t ever know that song is about them.
“Performing is just another kind of release really. It's that combination of everything coming together at that one time you’re playing that song live and you can see an instant reaction from your audience, which is a definite plus.”
Carpenter’s music has been played in television shows and even used in an Adidas campaign. “It feels good! Especially when I finally saw where ‘Landslide’ was used in this show over in the US. It was a song that I wrote in someone's kitchen seven or eight years ago and then here it was. They played pretty much the whole song in this really heartwrenching scene and it just made me go ‘holy crap it fits so perfectly’. So that was awesome.
"Adidas was just insane. It was a silly sort of situation that was like ‘What? My music? In that kind of format?’ It doesn't quite seem like it would work but it totally does.”
Never shy of showcasing her creativity, Brianna says her and her husband have prepared one-of-a-kind memorabilia for those who attend the album launch. “We've made and designed all this really cool merchandise. There are some wooden awesome things and bow ties instead of shirts or any of that normal kind of stuff that I didn't want. So the merch is going to be something really out there and interesting. We did all these designs and we've got really cool earrings and rings… all this really different stuff. It's got the Fringe logo on it which of course is my label name.”
After the release of her album, Brianna says fans can expect a single to follow. “It’s completely different from the first one and there will be a very heartwrenching film clip to go with that one I'm sure.”
