Music: The Common Tongue

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

If only Ludwig Zamenhof had looked to music to find a solution to the world's problems, maybe he would have found what he was looking for.

Esperanto, Ludwig Zamenhof’s century old vision of unifying the world through one common language, has been transformed to bring Queenslanders joyously together through the already existing universal language of music.

Queensland Music Festival's Artistic Director James Morrison has curated a program that embodies the spirit of Esperanto; music from a variety of cultures including Australian Indigenous, Brazilian, Indonesian, Maori, gypsy; in an array of genres including R&B, flamenco, pop, bluegrass, jazz and with the promise of more.

Boasting a line-up of some big international names among whom include Kate Miller-Heidke and John Rogers, Ursula Yovick and Emma Donovan from the Barefoot Divas, the Afrobeat Drummers and more.

Boosted by a generous helping of free events over a three day period, this Esperanto is one international language you will want to learn.

Esperanto will take place at the Brisbane Powerhouse from Friday July 26 to Sunday July 28.
