Certified Aussie rock royalty Ella Hooper goes dark with a foray into disco on her new single 'To The Bone'.

The latest solo offering from Ella sees her channeling her energies as a self-proclaimed 'pop witch' into an upbeat, tribal number that presents something new from a performer known for her rock aesthetics.

“I'm trying to explore things I haven't done before because sometimes the best way to stay in love with what you're doing is to scare yourself a little bit and I definitely haven't done disco before,” Ella says.

“I went full disco with this one but it still has that dark rock thing to it, which I really love in my music; there's always got to be a little twist, a little bit of a thorn on the rose, so to speak, that makes it a bit weird.”

Well-known as the frontwoman of Killing Heidi and for her extended public presence as a host, reporter and DJ, Ella says it's important for her solo work to stand independently of her previous work and that's exactly what 'To The Bone' is all about.

“For me this song was about breaking out of feeling a bit flat, a bit sh.t, a bit stagnant and limited,” she says.

“Like you've been limiting yourself or afraid to make a change, or afraid to cut someone off who you really need to and lose the energy vampires and start doing what's good for you again, even if it means walking through the fire, upsetting some people and changing your own self-identity to get to something that's much more truthful, vital and real.”

With more new music in the works and ready to be released as she sees fit, Ella will also be performing as part of the BIGSOUND showcase and says that even after all these years, her chameleonic approach to her solo career leaves her feeling as if she is a new artist every time she presents another project.

“I'm kind of acting like I'm a new artist here but the funny thing is every four or five years I feel like a new artist,” she says.

“I change genre so much and I challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone, so in many ways I feel like a baby again. How do I pull this off? How do I make this work this time, in this brand new world because the music industry changes so much as well?

“I've been to BIGSOUND a few times as an interviewer and a host but never as an artist. I want to take the new stuff there, treat it like I'm a new artist and also I haven't pushed my own solo music that hard; I've just let it bubble away and something in me said now is the time to give it a push and try to get it out there to as many people as possible.”

Ella Hooper performs as part of BIGSOUND (Brisbane) 5, 6 September.
