In what feels like the blink of an eye, Sydneysider Elizabeth Rose has racked up an impressive list of accolades.
triple j named her a 2012 'Next Crop' artist, Radar Radio called her one of the 'Top 20 Aussie Electronic Artists You Need To Know In 2012', and inthemix.com lauded her in its '25 Under 25: The Young Stars Leading 2013'. Perhaps best known for her vocal contribution to Flight Facilities' monster disco track, 'I Didn't Believe', she's just dropped her boldest tune to date, 'The Good Life', co-produced by ARIA Producer of the Year Styalz Fuego.
Right now, though, she's here to tell you about her five favourite movie soundtracks.
1. Donnie Darko (2002)
This is hands down my favourite movie of all time! In 2004 there was a re-release of the film as a Directors Cut along with an expanded two-disc edition that features some of my favourite songs: INXS' 'Never Tear Us Apart', 'Head Over Heels' by Tears For Fears, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division, and 'Under The Milky Way' by The Church, to name a few.
2.The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
I had to study this movie for my HSC (you would've thought that ruined it for me but it didn't) and I really loved the soundtrack from it! This film is about two Argentinians who travel right around South America in the 1950s (really the story of Che Guevara as a young man) so the music throughout is composed by Gustavo Santaolalla just on guitar — it moves around from classical, flamenco to electric.
3. Babel (2006)
First of all I love this movie as well as the soundtrack! A bit of Earth, Wind & Fire... then some Fatboy Slim, some more Gustavo Santaolalla and an absolutely beautiful track by Ryuichi Sakamoto called 'Bibo No Aozora' — that was where I first heard of his music and went searching for more. He has an amazing album with this German electronic producer Alva Noto called Summvs.
4. The Virgin Suicides (1999)
I love Air and Air composed the soundtrack to this knockout of a film.... simply beautiful/ amazing! 'Highschool Lover' is one of the best songs on there.
5. Tron Legacy (2010)
I'm a bit of a tomboy at times and I love ‘Tron’ — this movie was so cool! But what makes it even COOLER is that Daft Punk wrote the music to it and have a sneaky feature as the DJs in one of the scenes. But wait, it gets better... a collaborative EP between Ariel Pink, Daft Punk and TRS-80 was released in association to all of this called Sky Sailor that has two Daft Punk remixes by TRS-80 of their Tron tracks with Ariel Pink singing over one of them... very cool!
