Egoism Are Ready For ‘More’ In 2020

Sydney dream-pop band Egoism's current single is titled 'What Are We Doing?'.
Senior Writer.
A seasoned all-rounder music writer and storyteller with a specialised interest in the history of rock.

At the time of year when most people are looking to slow down and kick back, Sydney duo Egoism are getting pumped up for a killer end-of-year party in Brisbane.

As Egoism, Olive Rush and Scout Eastment have made their name producing pristine pop melodies on a lush shoegaze backdrop.

In September, Egoism dropped their latest song 'What Are We Doing' along with a video clip. As part of their final shows for 2019, Egoism head to The Triffid (in Brisbane) for a massive party with Velociraptor, Felivand, Carla Geneve and more.

We catch up with Olive and Scout for a chat about the year that was and what may come in the year ahead.

Looking back on 2019, what have been some of the big moments for you two this year?
Playing at Bigsound and getting told there was a line of people out the door trying to see us play. Getting interviewed as the triple j Unearthed feature artist in the exact same room where they used to do Like A Version.

You're playing GRAIN's end-of-year bash at The Triffid – what can audiences expect from your set?
I wanna say something generic like 'a couple new songs', but I reckon you can look forward to us making fun of each other in between songs.

Considering it's an end of year party, will you be sticking around after your set to celebrate?
Of course! [We] booked our return flight for the following evening for a good reason, haha!

How will you two each be celebrating Christmas/ the holiday season?
Family, and then we’re going to Taiwan for a holiday in January.

Christmas carols – yay or nay? Would you record an Egoism cover?
Hahaha! No, we’re way too cool, self-conscious to do that.

How has the sound and style of Egoism's music evolved since you started writing together?
We could write an essay on this, considering we’ve been writing songs together since we were 16. I guess the major shift has been us embracing technology and a lot of laptop trickery. And in turn becoming less afraid of writing real pop hits.

What do you two want to achieve with Egoism in 2020?
More. Lots more of everything.

Is there more new music coming next year, perhaps an album?
That is a secret, but yes more music.

And you have a national tour in February/ March with Pinkish Blu – looking forward to packing up the tour van and travelling this big, burnt country of ours?
Neither of us can drive. . . Packing up the Boeing 747 will be ok, I guess.

Egoism play Planet (Sydney) 19 December, GRAIN's End Of Year Party at The Triffid (Brisbane) 21 December and Farmer & The Owl (Wollongong) 29 February.
