It's less than a month until Earth Frequency Festival (EFF) returns to SE QLD for a four-day celebration of electronic music as well as fostering environmental themes and a positive community spirit.
A meeting place where people from many different backgrounds, ages and walks of life come together with the shared interests of music, nature, technology, culture and peace, music is at the core of the EFF experience."Diversity is at the heart of Earth Frequency," Festival Director Paul Abad told us last month – click to read the interview.
"For people who love to party outdoors and enjoy hearing new music and something different to what the mainstream festivals have to offer, I like to think we’re at the cutting edge of innovative electronic music with offerings across the spectrum of bass music genres like glitch-hop, drum and bass, dubstep, mid tempo and trap, as well as the much loved 4/4 beat genres: techno, psytrance, house, and progressive.
"We also have a great selection of live bands and our prime-time slots focus on acts that meld together multiple styles, live and electronic music, and visual arts to create a multi-sensory experience you won’t find elsewhere."
Once again, the festival has provided a diverse and thoroughly extensive programme of music for its 15th anniversary. To fully immerse yourself in the line-up, head to their official website; here we take a snapshot of the 2020 highlights.
Berlin-based techno DJ and producer, Electric Ballroom's Thomas Schumacher headlines EFF. "Techno is not just a tool to make people dance," he says. "It is a very personal, intimate way of expressing myself."
He compares himself to the captain of a ship. "I purposely steer my sets into rough waters. I want to help people get out of their heads and into their bodies. I create a safe space for people to lose their minds, in the best possible way. They know they don't need to worry or be afraid, because I’ve got them. I know what I'm doing. They can let go and just be."
Then there's icon of psy-progressive and a frequent headliner on many stages across Europe, Australia, Africa and Brazil, Talpa aka Goran Juric who comes to EFF fresh off releasing a new track, 'Outcast'.
Multi-talented DJ, producer and vocalist, John Graham began his production career in the early 1990s and is best known as Quivver.
Widely regarded as one of the world's most versatile and consistent DJs and producers, he launched his new imprint Controlled Substance in 2017 as a test bed for his darker, more experimental productions.
Andrea Graham, better known by her stage name The Librarian, is a celebrated Canadian DJ, producer, and curator. She is the co-founder and music director of Bass Coast Music Festival and is widely considered one of bass music's leading creative minds and tastemakers.
On the live front, EFF will feature a host of bands including Tijuana Cartel, who have spent the last decade mixing in influences that haven’t been fused in the past; their penchant is for Middle Eastern scales, beats that get a floor moving and a general psychedelic approach in song structure and ethos.
Another local act worthy of your attention is internationally renowned dub aficionados Kingfisha. Sultry and undeniably infectious, the Kingfisha sound highlights deep, all-encompassing rhythms with a feather-light touch and an understated soul vocal that has built them an impeccable reputation as Australia’s bass-heavy roof-raisers.
