Dumpstaphunk From The Topshelf

Dumpstaphunk
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Dumpstaphunk, with a phat 'ph', are one of the hardest-hitting funk bands to arise from New Orleans.

This weekend, they return to the Sunshine Coast to play their only Australian shows at the Caloundra Music Festival.

What made you decide to come back to Australia?
Our experience performing last year at Caloundra [Music] Fest is primarily what made us want to come back. The beach, hang and vibe of the festival was great.

What can we expect from your set at the Caloundra Music Festival?
You can expect a lot of material from our latest record and some additional New Orleans flavour mixed in throughout our sets.

The band is touring quite consistently, is it exhausting? Or is it just too much fun?
Touring can be a blast and totally exhausting all at the same time.

How do you think the band has developed since you first started?
The sound of the band has definitely developed and evolved over the years due to us fusing and getting tighter as a unit as the result of a transition of drummers.

If you weren't a musician, what would you be?
A consultant.

Any tips for bands starting out?
Don't sign contracts with shady people.

What are the plans for the band in the future?
We plan to go back into the studio during any upcoming non-touring time to write new music.

Are there any funny anecdotes from touring/being a band in general?
A good airport (or public place in general) activity is finding people who look like weird or mutated versions of famous characters or people. Hours of entertainment.

What is your favourite thing to see in the audience while you are on stage?
People dancing so hard that they look somewhat insane but don't care at all and continue to rage.

Dumpstaphunk play the Caloundra Music Festival on 4th & 6th October.
