Fall back in love with hip hop star-on-the-rise Duckwrth when he returns to Australia in May for Groovin The Moo and a double-bill sideshow tour with Danish pop sensation MØ.
“I like it when people put two different ingredients together that some people will probably say don't even belong together, and surprising the f... out of everybody and making a really good meal. So, I plan to make some good meals,” Duckwrth laughs about he and MØ on the same bill.
Duckwrth got his first taste of Groovin The Moo last year when he played Bunbury and says that this year he's looking forward to taking full advantage of the touring festival to see other parts of the country. “It was funny because they put me after Paul Kelly last year and I thought that was pretty funny and random because Paul Kelly is like the Bruce Springsteen of Australia and they decided to put me after this, like, legend; it was so funny but it was nice,” he recalls.
After slowly building his profile with his 2016 debut LP 'I'M UUGLY' and 2017's 'An XTRA UUGLY Mixtape', Duckwrth is on the verge of releasing his sophomore album 'The Falling Man'.
The first releases from 'The Falling Man' – 'Fall Back' and 'Soprano' – have Duckwrth branching out to incorporate heavier hip hop sounds into his music. “I'm trying different sounds, doing more instrumentation,” he says.
“I'm using classical instrumentation like cello; cello is a heavy sound happening in the project... [and] I'm singing more but also rapping my ass off, bigger sounds.”
Nearly every song of Duckwrth's mentions the word 'fall' at some point, and with the new album being called 'The Falling Man', Duckwrth kindly explains the significance the concept of falling has in his work. “It's a lack of control. When you fall… pretty much everything goes to sh.t,” he laughs.
“So either you can lose your whole sh.t, lie down and freak out until you hit the bottom, or you can accept the fact that you're falling and hope for the best, but beyond that I find it really interesting the feeling of falling, in so many different ways. I just find it fascinating to not have control.
“Also, I would like to say in the following project from this one, because 'Falling Man' is two-part, that you can never fall too deep. There's always room to get the f... back up, for lack of a better word. There's always room for salvation and always room to get back up so it doesn't matter how far you fall, how far we all fall as humans, there's always room to do something about it.”
Such is the overall message of positivity Duckwrth instils in his music, it's a defining characteristic of his artistic identity. “If I'm going to be adding something to the world, it's got to produce abundance,” he says.
“I feel like different lifestyles have been allotted this feeling of abundance, and abundance doesn't always come in economic stability, it comes from peace of mind and tranquility. Everyone deserves peace of mind, so if I can give things to people that help them through their daily lives, in whatever way that may be, I feel like I have a purpose on this planet rather than taking up air and space.”
