In the weakest hip hop beef since Soulja Boy went at it with Fabolous, Drake has fired verbal shots at Macklemore.
At last month's Grammys, Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis won the award for Best Rap Album — but Macklemore felt like Kendrick Lamar deserved it more. Rather than refusing to accept his award, or handing it over to Kendrick Lamar directly, Macklemore did the next best thing — he apologised to Lamar via text message, and then posted a screenshot of the text to Instagram.
Lamar didn't seem to care too much, telling an interviewer that Macklemore's win was "well deserved".
Drake, who also lost out to Macklemore at the Grammys, has a stronger opinion. He's told Rolling Stone that the text was "wack as fuck".
"I was like, 'You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W, and if you feel you didn't deserve it, go get better — make better music... It felt cheap. It didn't feel genuine. Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won?
"This is how the world works: He made a brand of music that appealed to more people than me, Hov, Kanye and Kendrick. Whether people wanna say it's racial, or whether it's just the fact that he tapped into something we can't tap into. That's just how the cards fall. Own your shit."
While Drake's argument is well reasoned, is it maybe possible, just a little bit, that Drake has the sads because Macklemore didn't send an apology text to him? Well, yeah.
"To name just Kendrick? That shit made me feel funny. No, in that case, you robbed everybody. We all need text messages!"
It's not exactly Biggie and Tupac, is it?
