You've almost certainly heard of DMA's, even if you haven't actually heard DMA's.
The Newton trio burst onto the scene in February amid a flurry of hype without ever playing a single show. They were signed to tastemaking label I OH YOU (a signing accompanied by a gushing press release from label director Johann Ponniah) based on a handful of demos recorded in a bedroom, and promptly released 'Delete', a radio-friendly single that launched a thousand Oasis comparisons.
As far as they see it, DMA’s are bringing back classic ‘90s garage pop, but with a modern twist. “Naturally there's going to be a modern essence,” explains Johnny Took, one-third of DMA’s. “When I personally write songs, I'm not trying to be groundbreaking or do anything that no one has done before. I don't write music to prove I can do something no one else has done, I'm writing music so people can feel something from it.”
Having announced an east coast tour (after playing their first local show on the weekend), Johnny is excited to get the band on stage. “We've been hibernating for a while with this band. With my other band I was playing three or four gigs a week. But for the DMA's we wanted to concentrate on the writing and studio work. We've been in bands that release something but have nothing to back it up with. I'm looking forward to actually being able to play these songs live.”
With their self-titled EP released last week, Johnny is already thinking about the group’s next step. “I can't give you a definite time period but I'm definitely thinking about the album and what songs will be on it. I want to release something really quickly but it's not just me who makes these decisions.
“I want to do it all. I want to go overseas and see what the response is like in the USA and Europe. Play some festivals over there and play festivals over here. I'd love to play Splendour [In The Grass]. For the last four or five years it's always been a dream and I feel like this will be the band to do it.”
