Brisbane brutal death metal band Disentomb break their silence of the past few months with the release of a new album and a headline slot at Dead Of Winter Festival in July.
The third full-length album from Disentomb is all but complete and will be released at Dead Of Winter. “We've just finished up the album, we've got the master back and it's sounding huge,” guitarist Jake says.
“We've taken a while off, but it's been worth it to get the album to where we want it. We're stoked with the results that we've had with taking the time off, we haven't rushed anything and we're about to drop a single in May with a film clip.”
Jake says with the new album, he and the band set out to carry on the work they have established on their two prior albums, 'Misery' [2014] and their 2010 debut 'Sunken Chambers Of Nephilim'. “It's pretty much a continuation of out last album – music that we enjoy listening to. It's just a creative outlet for us,” he says.
Drummer Henri adds: “Just making dark death metal as well, because there's not much death metal with atmosphere, that's what we tried to create – something with a bit of feeling. It's not all about the speed and intensity sometimes.
“It gets pretty relentless. We've tried to keep the atmosphere in there and there's definitely a few surprises that people wouldn't expect from a brutal death metal band. We've done what we thought sounds cool.”
Not having played live since September last year, Disentomb play some of their first shows of 2019 at Blacken Open Air as well as Dead Of Winter Festival, the latter of which they'll be co-headlining with the likes of COG, Mammal and Bodyjar.
With Dead Of Winter becoming the 'it' event for metal and heavy rock fans in Brisbane, Jake and Henri reckon it's the ideal setting to showcase the new album. “The new album drops on the day of Dead Of Winter, so our album will be available there,” Henri says. “New music we've never played live and that no one has heard before.”
Jake agrees, adding his own excitement for playing DOW 2019. “The line-up is huge this year,” he says. “It's kind of like a smaller scale of a Big Day Out-type line-up. There's something for everyone, there's something that everyone is going to enjoy.
“I think we played it in 2015 or '16, that was a while ago and it's grown a lot since then, so we can't wait to be headlining the metal stage and playing some new music as well, a brand-new set.”
This year also marks the ten-year anniversary of Disentomb, with both Jake and Henri marvelling at the fact that a bunch of metalheads from Nanango have been able to come so far playing the music they love.
“It's absolutely insane because we grew up in a small country town and no one ever expected to take Disentomb where it's gone. We've always kept going in the same direction and rolling with whatever happens.”
