LA's lady of experimental rock, Angel Deradoorian, is headed to Australia.
Better known by her mononymous stage name Deradoorian, the former Dirty Projectors vocalist, keyboardist and bassist is gracing Australian stages with her solo record, 'The Expanding Flower Plant'.
Although there was no singular influence, the music was written when she had the time to explore influential music. "There wasn't a particular story or concept [behind the songs]. I'm not really a storyteller in my mind. To me, they are vignettes for ideas or some form of developing philosophies that I'm creating with my life," she explains.
"Music is something [that] can help me explore the new philosophies and be able to portray those feelings and ideas to others."
Since the 2009 release of her first solo EP, 'Mind Raft', and her departure from Dirty Projectors in 2012, the 29-year-old musician is enjoying writing her own music as well as working alongside bands and musicians such as Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks, Flying Lotus, Brandon Flowers (The Killers) and members of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot.
Angel explains that while her music may be hard to define, she doesn't want to get stuck in a rut of a singular genre. "For me, [my music] is something that I want to constantly evolve or change."
Nowadays, Angel typically shares the touring experience with her sister, Arlene, who does percussion and back-up vocals. The Deradoorian family have always had a strong affinity with music says Angel, growing up listening to a wide range of artists including Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, James Brown and Stevie Wonder.
When she left high school at 16 to pursue her career, Angel only saw a future for herself in the music industry. "As a child, I definitely wanted to do so many things… [music] just felt right. I got very curious about playing in bands and kept asking people, my friends, if they played in bands and just doing as much as I could to get that kind of experience. What I was realising was that I needed to have my own group, my own kind of tribe.
"I left high school early, so I would have technically been in high school but [being in a band] was more of a common goal, a shared idea and just playing music and connecting with other people in that way… you learn a great deal about how to communicate and how to socialise in such an intimate setting."
Returning for her third trip to Australia, her second on tour, Angel is excited to share her music with the world once again. Though, this time she's even more pleased to be introducing her sister to one of the many places she's fallen in love with. "I think it's going to be fun to show her the places that I have a love for and excitement for.
"I really like Australia a lot. The people and drinking coffee there," she laughs. "As silly as that sounds, it's actually something that is on my mind as I prepare to go over there… hopefully we can maybe go to the beach!"
