Deadbeat Society are a Brisbane trio featuring guitarist/ vocalist David Deadbeat, bassist Harry Worth and drummer Lachlan Strachan playing what they call 'music for the cultural apocalypse'.
A rabid and unapologetic blend of psychedelia, grunge, stoner rock and blues, Deadbeat Society released a four-track EP called 'Hedonism', an aptly-titled introduction to their frenetic sound and style.
Hot on the heels of 'Hedonism' comes their debut album, which they will launch with fellow Brisbane groups, Ghost Audio and Lunar Seasons, at the New Globe Theatre.
Deadbeat Society… what's the story so far?
[Dave] We've been playing together as Deadbeat Society for around 18 months now. The current line-up has been together since February.
Psychedelic grooves and stoner vibes… does that best describe the band?
That pretty much sums it up. Throw in a pint or two of grunge and your description would be spot on.
Tell us about the debut EP, 'Hedonism'… how does it introduce the band?
The EP is a good introduction to the band/ live show. Everybody should download it for free at deadbeatsociety.bandcamp.com - all the songs are radically different from each other and show our diversity.
You recorded at Worx Studios in West End with Tim 'Bones' Fogarty; what was that experience like?
I know the place fairly well (some of my previous projects have jammed there). So it felt natural and comfortable to be recording at the place.
What did Bones bring to the project?
Bones made the entire process painless and comfortable. I've known him for a few years and shared a tonne of line-ups with him and his bands, so he knew what we were going for. He speaks our language.
Is the album an extension of the EP release?
Yes. Everything has come from the same sessions. We were originally going to release 'Hedonism' as a single, but decided at the last second that we wanted to have our first release be more than that and we felt the b-sides were more than b-sides, so EP it was.
You'll be launching the debut album at the New Globe alongside Ghost Audio and Lunar Sessions. Amped for the night?
It should be an amazing time. Ghost Audio and Lunar Seasons are two of my favourite, local bands and I've spent a tonne of time partying with Kev (GA) and Adam (LS). I've heard most of the new Ghost Audio album, it's fucking ace. You don't want to miss the show.
Anything a little extra special planned for the evening? And where's the after-party at?
Just the usual ass-shaking insanity we always bring. There will be a few surprises, but they wouldn't be surprises if I blurted them out here. Sabotage is where we're holding the after party, there are a couple of after-after parties happening at private residences. If you turn up at Sabotage, chances are somebody will let you know the address.
Ghost Audio and Lunar Sessions; both bands are good mates of Deadbeat Society, right?
Definitely. We spend a large amount of our Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights together listening to tunes, partying hard and having a good time. It was just a coincidence that we were all hitting the studio and releasing stuff at similar times. An awesome coincidence.
Both bands will also be peddling new releases on the night… any shapes you can thrown down?
If you like our EP, the album is even better again, so you'll be blown away. If you liked the last Ghost Audio album, this one will blow you away. Take it from me.
The best stoner story you can tell scenestr without incriminating yourself is?
I once took to much acid and got lost in a venue's bathroom. It took me ten minutes to find my way out, which meant I was five minutes late on stage. My band mates at the time weren't so pleased, but the show ended up being insane.
After the New Globe show, the next chapter for Deadbeat Society will be?
We have a couple of tours coming up and I've already written half of the next album, so we'll probably start recording that at some point in the next six months.
