Dead Letter Circus will be hitting the road this August for ‘The Burning Number' Australian tour.
Released in August last year, Dead Letter Circus’ third album, ‘Aesthesis’, debuted at #2 on the ARIA Chart, scored Triple J’s Feature Album and an ARIA nomination for Best Rock Album.
Recorded in two months with nothing but the bare bones of ideas formed before entering the studio, Dead Letter Circus were happy with how it turned out. “I feel like for some people it might have taken a little bit longer to sink in because it’s a little bit different from our previous [albums], but we’re stoked. We’re pretty excited about writing the next one,” vocalist Kim Benzie says.
Recording the entire album with such a tight deadline helped Dead Letter Circus get back to their roots, staying motivated throughout the recording and production process. “It was really good because we jammed a lot so I think it’s a very cohesive album… It was really good for the morale of everyone as well. We sort of came out of that like, ‘wow, can’t wait to do the next album’, rather than getting to the end of the outposts and everyone’s like, ‘fucking shoot me if we have to do another album’,” Kim says.
They enjoyed it so much in fact they released the official ‘Aesthesis' documentary following their journey. “We had an opportunity for a friend to come in and film it for us and capture it. At the start it could’ve been just for us: our own little memoir of it.
“We weren’t sure there would be anything interesting enough to be able to release it so it was just an experiment and we went, ‘this is pretty cool; I’m sure someone will appreciate it’.”
With ‘Aesthesis’ now under their belt, Dead Letter Circus are struggling to fit everything into the set-list for their national tour. “We’ve sort of begun arguing about the set,” Kim says. “Because there’s three albums and an EP now we find it really hard to pick the set-list… But for this one we’re going to try and pick a more eclectic set and play some of the [songs] we don’t get to play very often.”
Joining Dead Letter Circus on tour will be Clint Boge – former frontman of The Butterfly Effect – and Melbourne’s Rival Fire. In conjunction with their national tour, Dead Letter Circus will also be donating $1 from every ticket sold to Sea Shepherd, with ticket buyers given the opportunity to match the donation. “We’d been wanting to do it for years, which was to create a concept where you could include some of your ticket price to go towards a charity,” Kim explains.
After discussing their interests with their manager, Dead Letter Circus came to the conclusion that Sea Shepherd was the best fit for them. “We all admire that organisation; that’s true activism you know… We thought it was a perfect fit in the end when our manager suggested them.”
