Adelaide is filled with a lot of interesting spaces and dance music event Day Club is here to bring the party to them.
“We’re looking at doing something interesting,” says DJ and Day Club co-organiser Ryley Smithson about the Umbrella: Winter City Sounds event.
“We pitched the idea of having this day time, house-music party and really get something happening in Adelaide because Adelaide in winter gets kind of dreary.”
Ryley has been DJing for 16 years, spinning vinyl in pubs, clubs and on the radio. After performing inside dark rooms for so long, Ryley and co-founder Dylan Sanders decided to bring the party out of the nightclubs and into the daylight.
The first Day Club took over a boat on the River Torrens, with others taking over the many wineries surrounding the city. “The idea is to create something that is really individual and have a party in some really unique and special places around Adelaide.
“We want to do something completely different, out of nightclubs. We wanted to do an event that happens before a club would open; it warms you up to that nine o’clock point.”
The upcoming Day Club will be held in conjunction with Music SA’s Umbrella Festival, taking over Chateau Apollo for a day of fun. “This one’s going to be really exciting,” he says.
“It’ll be the first one we’ve done in winter and the second one we’ve done within the CBD. Usually we’re outside of town, but when we can find a unique space in town we do it.”
Day Club’s Umbrella line-up features some of South Australia’s best dance music acts including house DJ J Hennessey and local producers Hartway. Ryley will also spin tunes, ranging from funk, down-tempo and chill-out music. “We like to create an atmosphere that’s lovely and nice,” he says.
“I’m really conscious about the sound that I want and how to build it up in the next hour and the hour after that. We don’t push the mood and we don’t try to do anything that’s too forceful as far as music goes.
"The idea is a very down-tempo, day-friendly playlist. We just let the day evolve and keep everything casual. It works really well like that.”
