Crooked Colours Venture Into The Cosmos

Perth electronic wizards Crooked Colours have been confirmed to headline COSMOS, a new regular concert series set to reignite Sydney’s nightlife.

Vocalist and guitarist Phil Slabber says he and the band are extremely proud to be part of the first COSMOS performance and that it’s a shining light in what’s been a very dark time for live music in Sydney. “I think Sydney is begging for that kind of thing right now,” Phil says.

“It’s time we had a little win or time we had something positive like that. Sydney’s had a bit of a rough run over the past year or so in terms of live music, so anything that’s going to champion or spur-on the scene here we’ll get around 110 per cent.”

Crooked Colours will be joined by a curated selection of live electronic acts for the inaugural concert including Running Touch, Moonbase, Poy-Sian and Nastyboys, plus more. Phil says it’s these types of shows that give emerging bands the opportunity to play live.

“So much of the scene was built around the late-night clubs,” he says.

“Since those small, late-night clubs shut down it’s been hard for bands on that level to get a foothold and be able to show what they’ve got. Something like this will change it up and adapt to the little landscape that’s being created now. It’s nothing but positivity, so hopefully it continues going well and we see more and more of this happening.”

Crooked Colours’ announcement on the COSMOS bill comes after the release of their debut album ‘Vera’ back in June, which Phil describes as “flawless”. “Everything has happened how we wanted it to and we’ve hit all the marks that we expected, so we couldn’t be happier with the whole release,” he says.

“It’s been received well, we did our first album tour off it and that went really well; it’s all gone brilliantly and we’re stoked. We’re just so fortunate that we’ve got fans that really get around us and support us in that way, so it makes a huge difference.”

The COSMOS concert will be one of the last chances for audiences to see Crooked Colours live before they make their maiden voyage to Europe, returning just in time for the summer festival circuit.

“Just after COSMOS we head off to Europe to do our European shows then come back in summer for the festival run, so we’re trying to ramp up our show and get it ready for the festivals later in the year.

“We’re trying to pick it up a little bit,” he says of their live performance. “The album tour was more of an introduction to the album and to play the album songs live to everyone. From here on I think we’re going to turn it into more of a live spectacle and turn it up to eleven, as they say.”

Once back in Australia, Crooked Colours will end their year in style when they take the stage at a number of festivals. “It’s going to be a good way to bump off the year,” Phil says.

“Festival shows are always the most fun to play; everyone at a festival is just having a good time, so it’s like the little cherry on top of the cake for us at the end of the year.”
