Christopher Lawrence pens a letter to Australia during his Pharmacy Music tour.
I’d like to begin by saying it’s great to be back.
Having lived in Melbourne for three years, I am quite fond of Australia. Returning here after moving back to Los Angeles I am reminded of how wonderful Australia is.
I arrived in Melbourne a week before my first show to spend time with my wife’s family in Melbourne. I am now visiting my father and brothers on the Sunshine Coast. Although my family is originally from the US, they moved to Australia by coincidence. So I have a lot of family here.
The Pharmacy Music tour in support of my label began on the 10 January with a fantastic show in Melbourne at Room 680. It was the grand opening of Sanctuary Saturdays for Evolution Events and I was blown away by the trance fanatics that came out. It was impressive to see how popular, underground trance has become once again in Melbourne.
I remember playing at War Of The Worlds II in Melbourne for the first time back in 1999 with Chris Liberator. Trance was huge at that time. In fact, it was in 2004 that Frank Venuto from Green Ant, producers of War Of The Worlds, invited me to another festival he was a part of called Rainbow Serpent. That event was a pivotal moment in my DJ career. I had been playing underground trance, including psy-trance, since 1992 but Rainbow Serpent was the first pure, psy-trance festival that I had been to. Hearing psy at that outdoor festival and in that environment influenced my sound more than any other single party in my life.
Everything will come full circle when I play at this year’s Rainbow Serpent on the 24 January. Every event is special but playing Rainbow Serpent is extra special. I can’t wait to perform at the festival that has been so influential in my sound as well as my label, Pharmacy Music. Pharmacy is dedicated to promoting the best in underground music with psy-trance being the dominant sound. The label has become so successful over the last year, thanks to the incredible talent on the roster that we will actually be splitting the label into two. Pharmacy Music will continue as a psy-trance only label and we will spin-off Pharmacy Black for all the other genres.
It is exciting to see the resurgence in underground music. Commercial EDM has grown like an aggressive weed sucking the life out of dance music and encouraging an unsustainable culture of greed. Techno, house, progressive and trance are all thriving and as the EDM gold rush subsides it is great to see depth in music again.
The Pharmacy Music tour continues in Sydney to play Voodoo at Home Nightclub tonight, Friday the 16 January. Home is a brilliant venue and the perfect venue to host the tour.
I look forward to seeing you all on the dancefloor.
Many Thanks,
Christopher
