Chitra is a magnetic vocalist whose music navigates her existential being.
She's able to catch listeners off-guard with her astute observations of relationships, the world and her place amongst it all through breezy, carefree sounding indie – not to be confused with meek.Teasing a stream of new music born from the canvass of a period of deep reflection, her recent string of releases 'Go Easy' and 'In My Opinion' are instrumentally rich, fierce and confident takes on moving on from moments of frustration.
Encouraging us to be empowered to step aside rather than surrender to their internal flounder, her upcoming BIGSOUND showcases in Brisbane promises a full shedding of her humility into a charged, captivating frontwoman. Get to know Chitra before she takes the BIGSOUND stage.
What first inspired you to pursue music and how does that drive you today?
My sister always sang growing up and it made me always want to try it. Eventually in high school, when I started writing songs I realised how beneficial it is, like creating your own world that can both connect other people but feel so personal and private to you – so I'd say connection and catharsis is mostly what drives me.
Without reference to genre, how would you distinguish the space your music occupies and your artistry?
I'd say my music is fun and accessible to listen to with satisfying instrumentation that holds stories that are specific but universal.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I think the biggest thing would be to trust yourself, which may be a bit generic but it's true! You know what you like, what feels right and what's best for you. Making mistakes is fine too, good even.
What can we expect from your live show at BIGSOUND? Big sleeves and me having a very good time. I have a bunch of new music that I'm really proud of to share and an incredible band. The live show feels powerful.
Where will you be in five years time?
Making music and playing music! Making and sharing music that I feel proud of and people connect with is the dream. I'd also like to see some new places, get a dog and maybe have a garden that doesn't die in a month.
