A South Coast indie four-piece, Cheeky Leash's 2025 has seen them play Yours and Owls Festival and Wanderer Festival as well as showcasing at BIGSOUND in Brisbane.
Add support slots with the likes of South Summit, The Terrys, Surf Trash, Dear Sunday, and Death By Denim, and you can see why they're averaging 100k+ monthly Spotify listeners.
With their own headline national tour planned for November-December, Cheeky Leash recently released their newest single 'Change', which was recorded at Sonora Studios with Jack Nigro (The Terrys, Rum Jungle, Pacific Avenue, Lazy Ghost).
"The song is rooted in the cost of living crisis and reflects how society has become so focused on getting ahead that we've lost a sense of connection with each other," shares the band.
"It's a metaphor for transformation whether that's personal growth, the evolving world, or even the band's own musical development. There's a nostalgic, coming-of-age film feel to the track and lyrically, it's open to interpretation.
"Lines like 'still searching for change,' play on the dual meanings of spare money and a deeper desire for societal change, making it resonate differently depending on the listener's own experiences."
Cheeky Leash teamed with Film for Frank and writer-director Brendan Palmer for the song's music video, which was filmed along the picturesque Gerroa coastline. "'Change' was a change of pace for us, handing over the reins to Brendan as director and Mitch as videographer to get their perspective on what the song means to them as well as to us," the band says.
"It's different from us running around and having a laugh. It's more serious and we really wanted to get the best representation of the song as possible. The song has a deeper meaning and a different pace for the video compared to what we've done before, so there's more to explore and interpret in this one.
"We always seem to pick the wildest and coldest days for filming music videos, which presents its own challenges, but it's a whole lot of fun getting to create something with your friends.
"Making music videos is always difficult with limited time and resources, but it was really cool to see the passion from other collaborators who have now become an integral part of the project. We'll remember this one as our first time having an actor and handing over creative control, just trusting the process."
Here the lads get a lil cheeky with each other, divulging each member's bad habits when touring.
Brad
Brad's voice bellows like a human foghorn the second he's awake, echoing through the van like an unwanted alarm clock it drives us all mad, but especially Brody, who reacts like he’s being personally attacked.Brad also bites his nails like he's in a trance and has this endearing but infuriating habit of talking over someone talking not out of rudeness, but because he gets so damn excited to share whatever's in his head that he can't wait his turn; we are all a bit like this at times to be honest.
Brody
Brody is the band's loveable menace; he somehow manages to leave a mess even in places that were clean five seconds ago, and he's the king of stirring the pot just to see how far he can push us before we snap.He lives in his own weird, wonderful world, marching to a beat no one else hears, which means we all end up half-parenting him on tour. He's the baby of the band and while he drives us nuts, we wouldn't swap him for anyone else.
Jaydo
Jaydo is physically incapable of staying still; he's always tapping, fiddling, twisting knobs, or skipping songs halfway through the chorus, even if we were all vibing. He's like a kid who drank too much red cordial, but somehow in a loveable, chaotic-good way. The upside is he keeps things lively, even if your favourite track never gets a full play.Chris
Chris is the most reserved of the lot, super chill, until he's not. When he gets overstimulated or stressed out, you definitely know about it. The school teacher in him comes out and he cracks the whip like we're an unruly classroom. He doesn't really annoy us (probably the opposite), though we're all painfully aware that we annoy him more than he lets on. Still, he's the grounding force in the van; just don't push him too far or you'll be getting detention.
