Caravãna Sun's 'Burning Palms' Studio Session Photo Diary

Caravãna Sun are an indie rock band; their newest studio album is titled 'Burning Palms'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Recorded across the previous two years, Sydney/ Byron Bay collective Caravãna Sun have released their third studio album titled 'Burning Palms'.

The ten-track record was written while the band were on tour in Munich and Lisbon (pre-COVID) before the band ventured to a secluded space deep in the heart of the Blue Mountains to record 'Burning Palms'.

It features an eloquent ode to companionship 'Charlie', the intensely personal 'Stella', the dreamy rock of 'Afterlife' and their uplifting new single 'Leave It Behind'.

"Collaboration was a key aspect [to recording] as Chris Smithson ended up tracking a lot of the bass guitar parts and Ant Beard would swap over to keys," Caravãna Sun says.

"With many different influences, we ended up with a collection of songs that was truly necessary for us to write, given the pandemic.

"It was a truly cathartic and important record for us and saw the four of us as artists grow and redefine the creative cogs that turn Caravãna Sun behind the scenes.

"All of these songs were driven in such a way that meant we could play them live.

"For Caravãna Sun, the live connection has always been at the core of what we do and were super proud to be bringing these songs to the global stage."

'Burning Palms' was produced by the band, and mixed by Andy Lawson (Death By Denim, Eskimo Joe, End Of Fashion, Little Birdy) at Debaser Studio (Perth); with additional mixing and engineering by Ian Pritchett at Laketree Mountain Studios (Blue Mountains).

Set to play Bluesfest this weekend before embarking on a regional tour of NSW and WA in April-May, the band have released a music video for 'Leave It Behind'.

"We shot the video in the back streets of Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast, right before our show with The Cat Empire," Caravãna Sun says.

"We wanted to capture that pre-show energy. The way anticipation and excitement can evoke a sense of excitement and gratitude for what we do. With over 6000 people in the crowd, we knew we would capture something special."

The band have also shared some piccies from their time recording 'Burning Palms'.

Here's our beloved studio we recorded 'Burning Palms' in, nestled deep in the NSW Blue Mountains. Frequently visited by the elusive lyrebird.

Studio Diary 1

Here's Chris being the most excellent multi-instrumentalist. Picking up the bass to track some of the most complex tunes.

Studio Diary 2

Here's Luke Carra throwing down some fire vocals with his signature green tea in hand. Channelling that inner magic, we'd often turn the lights off for the last three vocal takes.

Studio Diary 3

Here's Ant and Smithers, deep in the preproduction phase of the record. Piecing together the piano and drums for firebreak.

Studio Diary 4

This photo was taken just up the road form the studio. Alarmingly close, it brought a whole new meaning to our album title 'Burning Palms'.
