ARIA-nominated indie charmers, Melbourne trio Camp Cope will release their new studio album, 'Running With The Hurricane', this March.
Four years removed from 'How To Socialise & Make Friends', the new record finds Georgia Maq (songwriter, vocals, piano, acoustic and electric guitar), Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich (lead bass guitar) and Sarah Thompson (drums, percussion) in a reflective space as they ponder 'faltered romances, secret crushes and vibrating with the confidence that makes you feel like you're on fire'.The title track also has a personal connection for the group, with 'Running With The Hurricane' named after the Redgum song of the same name – a nod to Maq's late father Hugh McDonald.
"The first record was us diving into whatever Camp Cope created," Maq says, "the second album was us when we were in the thick of it, and then this album is about how we've come out the other side.
"And we've come out stronger, more loving, more peaceful and better friends."
The process to record 'Running With The Hurricane' was a longer period than their previous records, the extra time allowing Camp Cope to labour over each track, fine-tuning every aspect as well as layering extra piano, backing vocals and additional guitar.
With the mantra as Hellmrich notes to "just do something that makes us happy and might make other people feel good too", Camp Cope recorded at Sing Sing Recording Studios with Anna Laverty (Nick Cave, Lady Gaga) who engineered and mixed the album – and produced alongside Maq.
The record also features contributions from friends Courtney Barnett and Shauna Boyle of Cable Ties who provided extra instrumentation on 'Caroline', 'Sing Your Heart Out' and 'One Wink At A Time'.
