Brisbane pop punks Call The Shots wear their influences on their sleeve, whether that influence comes from Simple Plan, All Time Low, Blink 182, or... porn star Alexis Texas.
"Josh [Setterfield] wrote the song when he was fantasising about spending the night with the porn star, Alexis Texas," guitarist Dion Cerreto says of the band's new single, the aptly named 'Alexis Texas'.
"If you look at the video, we actually got Phoenix Knight. She’s an adult film star from Brisbane who does a lot of work overseas. We were a bit nervous about working with her... the first scene we shot was her ‘webcamming’. It was her, like, laying on a bed in my lounge room, acting really sexual. A bunch of the extras were there, so it was just ten guys standing in a room looking at this girl being sexy on a bed. So that was awkward for a while.
"But as the day progressed, we realised she was actually really cool. We were just chatting with her. She actually runs an agency, and she was like, ‘if you ever need girls, just let me know and I’ll get you a bunch of girls’."
Of course, Call The Shots aren't short on girls as it is. They recently secured a spot in Dolly Magazine's Hottest 100, an ongoing competition that relies on the votes of teen girls to determine the nation's "hottest band". They're not just making up the numbers, either.
"That was really crazy," Dion laughs, "because we didn’t even post about that. Our fans talked among themselves and said, ‘oh, there’s this Dolly Magazine comp, let’s hit it up and spam Call The Shots’. We didn’t even think about it, because, you know, One Direction are on that list. If you look at the shortlist, it’s all these massive bands, and then… us.
"We had a decent percentage of the vote, too. So we’ve posted about it a few times since then, and last time I checked, a week or so ago, we were running sixth out of those 100 bands. I mean, OK, I guess those bands aren’t promoting the competition, but we didn’t really promote it either. So it’s amazing."
