Butterfingers are back in a big way, with a brand new single and a run of live dates including Gold Coast event Shakafest.
Butterfingers made a lot of noise in the early to mid 2000s with lyrically sublime tracks like 'Yo Mama (Is On The Top Of My Things To Do List)', 'Everytime' and 'I Love Work'. Their newest single, 'Big Night Out', brings to an end what has been ten years of silence from the Brisbane bad boys.
With Eddie's trademark wicked sense of humour and a fat and funky groove, it's as if Butterfingers never even left. The track was released in March and chronicles the true story of when frontman 'Evil' Eddie Jacobson became trapped in an alley with a broken spine after a big night out.
In a recent interview with The Courier-Mail , Eddie told Sally Browne all about his fall from grace. “We were at Ric’s and were planning to go somewhere else,” Eddie recounts. “We had a large group of people and whenever we decided ‘let’s go’, one or two of us would have bought another drink. We just kept getting stuck at Ric’s.
“Then I was just bored, so I decided to climb up and jump over this wall because I thought there was a walkway on the other side. I fell from the roof level into the alley below and no one could see me.”
It wasn't until an hour later that Eddie was found, when bandmate Olly Thomas looked over the wall. That was 15 years ago and Eddie insists he's done plenty of growing up since. These days, the most tumbling he encounters is caring for his three-year-old daughter.
During their initial tenure as a band, Butterfingers produced two albums under their own label Valley Trash Records, 'Breakfast At Fatboys' in 2004 and 'The Deeper You Dig...' in 2006. Their sophomore release spawned the anthemic single 'Get Up Outta The Dirt', which charted at number 83 in the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2006 and received an APRA Award the following year for 'Most Performed Urban Work'.
In 2012, Eddie reinvented himself as a solo artist under the Evil Eddie moniker and released his album 'Welcome To Flavour Country' featuring smash-hit single 'Queensland', which continued in the tradition of catchy riffs and highly singable lyrics.
'Big Night Out' is a most welcome return by Butterfingers for their long-time fans, who still have the chance to see the boys rock-out live on stage.
Butterfingers play Villa Noosa (Sunshine Coast) 9 June, Racecourse Hotel (Ipswich) 10 June and Shakafest (Gold Coast) 19 August.
