Busking For Love On Valentine's Day At Brisbane Festival

Busking World Record Attempt
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

As part of Brisbane Festival, 'Valentine's Busk' - to be held 14 February - will be part of an ambitious project in attempt to break the Guinness World Record title for 'Largest Busk'. Currently, the record stands at 230 participants, held by Great Northern Aid Trust (United Kingdom) as part of its Versus Cancer events in 2007.

While busking will take place from the afternoon, musicians will be gathering together on the Maiwar Green (located between the Gallery Of Modern Art and State Library Of Queensland) in the evening to create a eclectic collection of sounds and hopefully a new, world record.

The festival will provide a veritable smorgasbord of musicians and performers for people to enjoy in the Cultural Precinct at South Bank. Buskers will not only be playing for spare change, but will go into the running to win an engagement at Brisbane Festival 2015, studio recording time and more.

Brisbane Festival artistic director David Berthold sees this as an opportunity to celebrate the arts and culture that Brisbane has to offer. “Brisbane loves arts and culture, so we have chosen Valentine's Day to get into the spirit of Brisbane Festival a little early,” explains Berthold. “If you are stuck for ideas this Valentine’s Day, come down to South Bank and enjoy the wonderful kaleidoscope of buskers and roving entertainers.”

Indie-pop rockers The Basics will be headlining a free, all-ages show at the Cultural Precinct, with the winner of the People's Choice Award (to be awarded on the day) also playing alongside the Melbourne band. Coming off the back of two sold-out Brisbane Festival shows and a newly released album, the trio will take to the stage, celebrating their humble beginnings busking on many a street corner.

Brisbane Festival's Guinness World Record for 'Largest Busk' will be held at South Bank's Cultural Precinct on 14 February.
