An act who first emerged last year, Gold Coast three-piece BUSINESS. earlier this year released their debut EP 'Like You'.
That release showcased the trio of frontman Elijah Hughes, Regan Hickey (guitar, bass) and Callum Watson's (drums) ability for sunshine-filled melodies and honest lyricism.Dealing in shoegazey, twee pop with an extra helping of tropical-surf indie rock, BUSINESS. are back with their newest EP, 'A Weekend At Finn's' – a collection of songs that highlights the band's own self-description of being a "decent blend of DMAs and Two Door Cinema Club".
"This EP is something truly special to us; it's hard to put into words exactly what it means," the band says.
"We spent a long weekend away together in a quiet town on the NSW coast, writing and recording these songs, and we can hear the beach house through the songs themselves.
"Shout out to Dylan Smithers for helping us track drums when we got back; you'd be listening to something completely different if it wasn't for his wizardry."
DREAMING AGAIN
This one would probably have to be the most fun song for us on the EP. We wanted something that hits you in the face as soon as you press play.Lyrically, this song has an essence of being stuck in the past and not being able to push forward. It has a real crunch to it; it's supposed to feel like something you're listening to with your best mates on the last day of school through the speakers in a sh.tbox car.
I NEED ANOTHER PLAN
This one was also super fun to put together. It has a huge '60s influence with the chord progression in the verses, but then switches back to a more modern feel in the chorus. It's a really straight-forward song that came together pretty quickly and we love everything about it.
ALL THAT
'All That' probably took the most tinkering in the long run. It was originally really synth-driven, but that all changed when we worked out what to do for the outro. The whole track has a real '80s vibe and we sort of subconsciously went from the synth/ pop side of it to the stadium rock concert side in one song. The lyrics are super straight-forward and it's one of the most fun songs to play live.
MELBOURNE
'Melbourne' is definitely the most personal song on the EP. There's not a whole lot to say about it; we just sat down with one microphone and a couple of guitars and hit record. It's a really raw, one-take track – something to switch up from the rest of the EP.HOME
This one was written in one sitting at the table. We came up with the riff first and it felt like it should be more of a slow burner. It flows on from the vibe of 'Melbourne' to start off with and by the end it brings together the rest of the EP – both sonically and lyrically. The acoustic section at the end of the song was recorded just before we packed up to leave.
