Burnside Mums Get Crafty With Their Favourite Adelaide Beer & Food Haunts

Burnside Mums will perform at Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Ahead of their appearance at Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival and the release of their second single ‘Grassfires’, local punk-rock band Burnside Mums share some insights into their favourite Adelaide haunts and drinking habits.

Craft beer or cider?
[Dylan: bass, backing vocals] Craft beer, even Coopers Session Ale has that nice, hoppy, craft flavour. But there are so many other specialty brews I like out there, like Young Henrys.
[Isaac: drums] Craft beer for sure. I find ciders normally too sweet and acidic for me, so I’d opt for a Little Creatures or a local craft in that case, something not too hoppy.

Best winter pub?
[Dylan] The Crown and Anchor. Best pub in Adelaide year-round.
[Ricky: guitar] The Hotel Metropolitan in the city opposite the Central Markets. Everyone calls it the Metro or even the ‘Tro’ if you want to get real tricky. Great band room out the back and a good warmth to it.
[Jason: lead vocals, guitar] The Gov front bar’s open fire and weekly roster of music makes it a hard one to miss in the winter, although The Grace Emily’s stout on tap make it a strong contender too; spending every Friday there for our June residency has been lovely.

What's the best beach in SA?
[Isaac] Tunkalilla Beach; not too many beach people.
[Jason] Contrary to popular belief, and if you don’t mind copping an eyeful of strangers, Maslin Beach is actually really scenic and beautiful. Otherwise there’s tonnes along the Fleurieu Peninsula, maybe Boomer Beach?

Best burger (or ribs) in town?
[Ricky] The Metro’s grilled chicken and bacon burger.
[Christian: guitar, backing vocals] Low and Slow in Port Adelaide not only makes the best ribs in town, but it has the best staff. It's probably one of the best eating experiences in Adelaide I reckon.

What does your mum/ dad always cook for you?
[Ricky] Potato bake; it's great, not quite Metro chicken burger great, but still great.
[Christian] Tortellini alla panna because I’m a weirdo and hate tomato.

If you were a contestant on a TV reality cooking comp, what would be your signature dish?
[Dylan] Curry over chips because it’s the best damn food in the world.
[Ricky] A grilled chicken and bacon burger maybe like the one at the Metro.
[Christian] My family’s secret family recipe of Tiramisu, Molto Bueno!

Best cure for a big night out?
[Isaac] Any decent burger should do the trick, maybe the chicken and bacon one at the Metro? Or Burger Theory.
[Jason] A whole lot of iced coffee or iced lattes if you don’t want all the sugar, even a double espresso if your game.

What's in store for Burnside Mums in the next 12 months?
[Jason] We’ve just finished up our June residency at The Grace Emily, which has been a bloody great time, playing with mates like Neon Tetra, Mercs and No Oaths. After playing the Beer and BBQ Fest (which we’re super excited for) we’ll be gearing up for the release of ‘Grassfires’.

‘Grassfires’ will be our second-ever single to be released through Swirl Records, the overseers of which are good mates of ours, great humans. We haven’t set a release date yet, so keep an eye on the web for more info, no doubt it will be real soon.

We’ll be having a single launch at the Crown and Anchor on 17 August with some of our favourite local acts and will also be touring interstate for the first time, playing at Woody’s Bar in Melbourne on 31 August. It definitely looks to be a busy few months coming up.

Burnside Mums play Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival, which takes place 6-8 July.
